Matthew Hollingshead Named To Massachusetts Assisted Living Association Board

Currently serves as NewBridge on the Charles Executive Director

Matthew Hollingshead has been named to the board of directors of the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association (Mass-ALA). He currently is Executive Director, NewBridge on the Charles, at Hebrew SeniorLife.

Mass-ALA is a not-for-profit association, dedicated to professionally operated assisted living residences in Massachusetts that provide housing and services for individuals with varied needs and income levels. It serves as the voice of assisted living in Massachusetts, providing information and education, and advocating on behalf of members and the seniors they serve. Mass-ALA promotes a model of care which treats all residents with dignity, provides privacy and encourages independence and freedom of choice.

As Executive Director for NewBridge on the Charles, Hollingshead is responsible for creating and maintaining an exceptional living environment for independent living residents. He oversees activities, programming, services provided in the community center, food and beverage operations, and the physical maintenance of the campus.

Hollingshead originally joined Hebrew SeniorLife in 2016 as executive director of Assisted Living at NewBridge on the Charles. Under his leadership the NewBridge on the Charles memory care program became locally renowned for its robust use of expressive therapies for care and support. He also helped oversee and support operations across the broader NewBridge on the Charles campus, including the community life, culinary, housekeeping, security, and maintenance teams.

From 2021 to 2022 Hollingshead served in a business development role, working to increase Hebrew SeniorLife’s ability to help seniors live their best lives in the best place while seeking opportunities for business growth.

Previously, Hollingshead held a series of leadership positions at another continuing care retirement community in Massachusetts. As a licensed nursing home administrator, his roles included oversight of long-term care, short-term rehabilitation, home health services, memory care, and facility operations.

Hollingshead also is part of the faculty for Boston University’s School of Hospitality Administration Master of Management in Hospitality Senior Living concentration.  He is a trustee of LeadingAge MA.

He received his Bachelor's from Northwestern University and his Master’s in Business from Boston University.

Specialized Recovery Care for Complex Conditions

Hebrew Rehabilitation Center provides medical and rehabilitative care for patients with complex medical conditions or multiple acute or chronic illnesses through our medically complex care service. This care level is designed for patients who are too ill for rehabilitative care alone, but do not need the full services offered by a major acute care hospital. It can also be appropriate for our long-term chronic care patients should they need a higher level of medical support for complex conditions.

Treatment combines hospital-level care with primary medical care, specialty medical care, and rehabilitation therapies. Since 2004, we have been caring for patients with a wide range of pulmonary, cardiovascular, orthopedic, neurological, and other medical and post-surgical conditions.

Our interdisciplinary team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians, and chaplains. Physicians representing many medical specialties are available to our on-site clinical staff for consultation.

Additionally, her history working in elder protective services allows her to comprehensively assess seniors for potential risks associated with memory loss, and subsequently connect them with supports to alleviate risks.

Helping senior patients and their families accept that a diagnosis of cognitive impairment, while obviously upsetting, does not have to be earth-shattering, drives her work at the Wolk Center. She has seen the positive impact when patients are able to recognize that accepting available supports and services can provide a better quality of life for all involved, and helps sustain family caregiver arrangements.

Advanced Memory Care for Late-Stage Dementia

Hebrew Rehabilitation Center’s ability to care for seniors with late-stage dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, is a step above that of a standard nursing home. Our long-term chronic care license allows us to employ our own physicians, and offer more nurses and care associates per patient. And between our Harvard Medical School affiliation and our Deanna and Sidney Wolk Center for Memory Health at Hebrew SeniorLife, seniors and their families can have peace of mind knowing they are getting the best care.

Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in both Boston and Dedham offers two types of memory support households. Our “memory friendly” households are designed for older adults with dementia who can benefit from a medical environment. Our “memory support” households offer that same environment, but within a secure unit for enhanced safety.

Our care team helps people with advanced Alzheimer’s disease and other late-stage dementias feel safe and stimulated, while maintaining a connection to community. We deliver personalized care, built on an understanding of each person’s life history and interests. This enables us to help strengthen and prolong each patient’s physical and cognitive abilities as much as possible.

On behalf of my family, I want to express our gratitude for the exceptional care our father received on the Memory Support Unit. It was here where my dad thrived and blossomed even as his disease progressed and his function declined. There was always a demonstration of warmth, love, and respect towards our dad. The quality of care our dad received was exceptional and the quality of his life these past two years was full and engaging. Please know that we greatly appreciate all of you—you are just incredible. – Family Member

NewBridge on the Charles offers the Gilda and Alfred A. Slifka Memory Care Assisted Living Residences to seniors with memory loss from dementia and Alzheimer’s who would benefit from memory care in a social, residential setting. Our memory care assisted living community was designed from the ground up to address the needs of those with early- and mid-stage Alzheimer’s and/or a related dementia. Residents move to our memory care residences directly from their private homes as well as from other residences on the NewBridge campus.

Each resident benefits from the close attention of our management team and staff. Prior to a new resident joining our community, we learn from families about each individual in detail—their history, talents, preferences, and goals. We then work collaboratively and continually from that point forward to ensure an enriching and meaningful memory care assisted living experience. For example, our Bridge Program is designed for seniors with mild or early-stage dementia. Drawing upon the social, intellectual, and environmental variety that our larger campus affords, participants benefit from the structure of our therapeutic memory care assisted living program while also accessing the additional educational and social opportunities in assisted living that matter most to them.
