Hebrew SeniorLife’s research division gets new name, new momentum
In recognition of the generosity and dedication of Hinda and Arthur Marcus, HSL’s research division, formerly known as the Institute for Aging Research (IFAR), will now be called the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research.
Hinda’s investment in aging research began 40 years ago when Marcus Institute Director Dr. Lewis Lipsitz was caring for her late husband at Beth Israel Hospital. She began by funding a highly impactful cardiac research program and continued to deepen her involvement through the years.
“I am so moved by this gift. A career-long relationship with the Marcuses has resulted in a profound collaboration that will impact seniors around the world,” says Dr. Lipsitz.
Over the years, Hinda has been a champion, advocate, and supporter of HSL as a former Board Chair, and current Board member and Chair of the Development Committee.
During the past decade, Hinda and her husband, Arthur, have played a significant role in the creation of the Marcus Institute’s Interventional Studies in Aging Center (ISAC), which exists to help in the creation and evaluation of treatments, therapies, and clinical programs that will improve the lives of older adults.
The Marcus’ gift will support the expansion of the ISAC’s clinical trials, and increase capacity across the Institute to grow its research and discoveries. This major investment positions the Institute to impact public policy through translational research.
“Hinda and Arthur’s generosity will be instrumental in enabling the Marcus Institute to pursue our strategic plan for research, and, in particular, to sustain the clinical trials program that they helped initiate,” says Dr. Lipsitz.
The Marcuses concur: “Our hope is that the gift will enable the Marcus Institute to translate research to public policy,” says Hinda. “What we learn here should be disseminated beyond our walls to our patients and residents as well as globally.”
The Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research (formerly known as the Institute for Aging Research—IFAR) brings together Harvard Medical School-affiliated physicians and researchers to study and overcome the challenges commonly associated with aging.
