Hannan Appointed Full Professor at Harvard Medical School
BOSTON — Hebrew SeniorLife Institute for Aging Research (IFAR) is pleased to announce that Marian T. Hannan, D.Sc., M.P.H., has been appointed as Full Professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston. She is proud to continue her medical research at IFAR and to teach Clinical Epidemiology to first-year HMS students as well as epidemiology courses at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
As Co-Director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center and Senior Scientist with IFAR, Dr. Hannan’s research focuses on risk factors for foot biomechanics, arthritis, hip fracture and osteoporosis in older adults. She is particularly interested in the effect of biomechanics upon physical function and the influence of body composition and nutrition upon bone health.
Talking about the prestigious achievement Dr. Hannan says, “With the solid support of my department and mentors as well as a lot of hard work focused on research, teaching and publications, it is indeed an honor to now become a Harvard Medical School Professor of Medicine.”
With Dr. Hannan’s appointment Hebrew SeniorLife IFAR now has five full-time Harvard Medical School professors working on important research to improve the lives of older adults. “My success certainly rests upon the laurels of those who have supported my research—individuals around the globe, at foundations and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—who wrote in recognition of my contributions to the medical field,” said Dr. Hannan. She is the principal investigator on numerous NIH grants and is the current Editor-in-Chief of the highly ranked medical journal, Arthritis Care & Research.
Published in more than 50 scientific journals, including the Journal of Bone & Mineral Research and the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Hannan has worked closely with investigators in the IFAR Musculoskeletal Research Center to quantify risk factors contributing to musculoskeletal diseases. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, a Master of Public Health degree from Yale University School of Medicine and her Doctor of Science degree from Boston University School of Medicine.
